Appeal to reason

Dear Spurtle

The St Stephen’s bell had not rung regularly in the years before it was brought back into working order prior to completion of the sale to the Benzies Trust.

If Mr Ross [Letters, 22.12.14] and the other chime-lovers coped with the silence for all those years (incidentally, in Mr Ross's, case out of earshot on Dundas Street), I do not understand how it can suddenly have become so important to his well-being.

I also don't understand why his important, non-lunatic wish to have noise (which in any case he cannot hear) in the middle of the night should take precedence over those who are kept awake by it.

@theSpurtle Finally, some epistolary good sense. I may faint.
