BELLEVUE RUBBISH AT RECYCLING

Submitted by Editor on
I'm sure that Environment Convener Councillor Hinds read my piece about the Bellevue recycling trial closely, and looked carefully at the pictures, writes Fred Street of the New Town Clean Streets Campaign.

So when she asserts that it 'is not the case' that recycling in the new bins is contaminated (Breaking news, 27.2.15), I assume that she means that the contamination will prove to be a transient and/or insignificant phenomenon in the longer term.

Her reaction seems to indicate also that, contrary to my previous impressions (and those of Mr Young of India Street), it does matter that recycling streams are made up only of the right materials.

I hope that it will be helpful to the Council's (and locals') appraisal of the trial to see regular photos of the contents of these bins.

Here are latest images, taken at around 11am on Friday 6 March.

1. Melgund Terrace

Almost everything is in plastic bags rather than loose. The Tesco bag on the lower right contains general waste including eggshells and a tomato. The pale blue things are bags of nappies or similar. There are two large black refuse sacks at the bottom of the picture.

2. Bellevue Street
Around half of the total space in the bin is taken up with large black general refuse bags.

3. Bellevue Road (north end)
There are a number of black general bags in this bin; however they do not show up well on the photos against the dark interior.  Happily, there is also a lot of paper and cardboard in the top layer in this bin.

4. Bellevue Road (south end)
More plastic bags.

Finally, I have been aware over the past few days, of gulls wheeling around our neighbourhood looking for nest sites. We will soon be into 'summer mode', that time of year when one is alerted at dawn by the excited squealing of gulls, to the presence of black bags left lying next to communal bins and outside gull bags.

A concerted effort will be required of us all this year if we are to get more sleep than last summer.
