An updated phone app has been launched by Edinburgh World Heritage which now guides visitors and locals around the architectural marvels of Broughton Street.

Funded by the Council's Economic Development Department as part of its 'Build Stronger Town Centres' strategy, participants 'are invited to discover a contrast of gothic and classical architecture, including the stunning Mansfield Traquair Centre'.

Edinburgh World Heritage's director, Adam Wilkinson, says: 'The app enables visitors to confidently explore the World Heritage Site, taking them to places they might easily miss'.

Its key elements include:

  • maps
  • zoomable, high-resolution photos
  • tales of past events/residents
  • the capacity to drop digital 'breadcrumbs' in the form of users' comments and pictures
  • an engaging games feature encouraging users to look and think more carefully about their surrounds.

The new update is one of three 'mobile tours' targeting 'niche shopping areas' in the capital – the others being for Thistle Street and the West End/Shandwick Place. It can be bought and downloaded from Itunes.
