INVASION OF THE LITTLE PEOPLE – PLANNING UPDATE (2.7.13)

Submitted by Editor on

The thunder of tiny feet shows no signs of abating locally, particularly now that the Edinburgh Nursery seeks to expand, again – this time at 119 Broughton Road (Ref. 13/02387/FUL).

The proposal would involve a change of use from hot food carry-out shop (currently Bert's fish and chip shop) to extend the adjacent day nursery at 3 Beaverhall Road (Monday–Friday, 8am–6pm).

Khushi's have withdrawn their application to extend the restaurant at 10–11 Antigua Street (Ref. 12/04541/FUL).

In Issue 219 we reported a significant level of discontent from neighbours who were concerned by current and potential levels of disturbance. Nine objections were submitted online in January, citing (among other reasons) disruption, loss of mature trees and loss of privacy.

In view of these, Khushi's have withdrawn their original application and will submit another which takes into account locals' concerns.

Hugo Boss plans to extend its premises at 13–14 Multrees Walk in order to promote Hugo Boss Women's clothing and accessories wear for the first time in Scotland. This would make the shop one of the elite 'marque' stores in the UK offering this range.

The news emerges from details in the store's application to amend its shopfront (Ref. 13/02259/FUL).

The latter proposals are based on a shocking threat:

'The need for a definitive and obvious brand presence is greatly increased in so much as the store extension is above an existing Café Nero site which is very strong both in type and extent of its current branding.

'Given this, Hugo Boss have real concerns that this may mislead people approaching from Elder Street and/or St James Shopping Centre to believe that the business at first floor level is in fact just an 'upstairs' to the Café Nero space and not a Hugo Boss store at all.'

The above quotation is drawn from  'Proposals and Supporting Information' prepared by the laughably named Hush Minoan Partnership.

Spurtle is unmoved by Hugo Boss's present and future, and unimpressed by its origins (Breaking news, 19.6.12).

Planning permission has been granted to Southside Meadows Ltd to separate a former townhouse (currently offices) at 21 Albany Street into two dwellings: one in the basement and one at ground, first and second-floor levels (Ref. 13/01090/FUL).

The proposal, which will create a two-bedroom and four-bedroom flat, also entails reopening an original window onto the front basement area, and creating new ground-floor access to the rear garden.

No. 21 was until recently the premises of the Century Building Society: Britain's smallest. Works will involve the stripping out of a bank vault in the basement.
