NEW PLANS FOR McDONALD ROAD GAP-SITE – PLANNING UPDATE (16.4.12)

Submitted by Editor on

Foremost Developments Ltd have received permission to begin pre-application consultations regarding property 35 metres southwest of 132 McDonald Road i.e. the former Martin & Frost site (Ref. 12/01168/PAN).

Few details are available yet, except that Edinburgh-based EMA Architects propose 'residential development of flats and colony houses'.

They will talk through plans at McDonald Road Library from 3pm–8pm on Wednesday 9 May, where the plans will remain on display for 2 weeks afterwards. The design team will also address the New Town and Broughton Community Council on 14 May.

Readers wishing to trace the history of the development on this and other websites should be aware that it is sometimes listed as 130 McDonald Road.

Listed building consent has been granted for the conversion of an office at 11 Waterloo Place to form Cafe Briganta (Ref. 11/02888/LBC). The Blandfield-based applicants had sought permission to create new internal partitions and attach signage to the front.

Planning officers noted that, whilst affixing signs to ashlar stonework is generally to be avoided, there were precedents nearby and the signage proposed was of good quality. It would have no adverse effect.

A Pilrig resident seeks planning permission to convert the mews garage at 5 Canon Lane in Canonmills, currently used for storage, into a 2-bedroom dwelling with home office (Ref. 12/01286/FUL).

The proposal, not the first conversion on the lane, envisages creating several new windows to admit light. The original garage door would be replaced by 'a timber panel of untreated Scottish Oak or Larch with a double glazed clerestory and a stable door of the same timber'. The stable door would have 'a glazed top section that has a timber shutter for security'.

On the front elevation, he proposes to paint the wall 'Farrow and Ball yellow' (right), and the window frames 'olive grove' (below). We think it sounds lovely – like stewed gooseberries and custard. At the rear, he hopes to have the wall painted 'Sandtex pure brilliant white' and the new timber door and windows 'Dulux Moonshine'.

Three existing timber-faced dormers he plans to strip back and clad in lead.
