PLANNING UPDATE – 3.9.11

Edinburgh Markets have been granted retrospective planning permission for the charities market they ran outside St Mary's RC Cathedral over the summer (Ref. 11/02147/FUL; Issue 198).

We trust this bodes well for the establishment of a Christmas Market here on Thursdays–Sundays between 8 and 24 December for which a planning meeting between organisers and potential stall holders has already been held.

As part of these plans, Edinburgh Markets has applied for a licence to run a bar and sell alcohol.

Duddingston Leisure Ltd have applied for permission to erect a canopy over 2 windows at 5–11 Leith Street (Ref. 11/0313/FUL and LBC). Unhelpfully, no other details are available online at present. Duddingston Leisure Ltd are, we believe, the owners of The Newsroom, formerly Rutherford's and now a cocktail lounge purveying 'food, fun and funk – 7 days a week'.

Nostalgic readers with happy memories of long, cider-fuelled sing-songs, sociable afternoons and opportunities for discreet self-medication at 3, 5–7 Cathedral Lane will mourn the possible passing of the much loved public toilet block there (Ref. 11/03129/FUL).

TIE Ltd hopes to demolish the convenience and replace it with two electricity substations, one for themselves and one for Scottish Power.

Hopefully, all the old clientele will find a warm welcome in the handsomely appointed facilities upstairs in John Lewis.

Permission has been granted for a smart new DSLAM Telecommunications Broadband Cabinet 1408mm x 750mm x 407mm on a spot 6m north of 22 Broughton Street (Ref. 11/03155/FUL). This  will presumably situate the structure away from the building by the side of the road where it will clutter the pavement.
