Hot and bothered

Dear Spurtle

Following the recent closure of Scotland's last coal-fired power station at Longannet, I wonder if any of your readers have, like me, noticed that their kettle seems to boil less rapidly?

Dear Mr Douglas

The problem lies in your preparation.

Try using a slightly fizzy variety of  renewable-energy-compatible Scottish spring water and give it a good stir (clockwise or anti-clockwise is fine) before closing the lid and switching on.

You should now find your kettle boils even faster than before.
