BROUGHTON FEEDS BACK

Submitted by Editor on

Work continues apace on fitting out the new Tesco branch at 30–30a Dundas Street (see Breaking news, 29.9.15).

A migraine of busy health-and-safety notices adorns the fencing.

It fusses about everything.

What to ingest, listen to, wear and accept. What to know before you go in, whom to be with when you’re there, and how to get out in a hurry. It even instructs local parents on what they should tell their children about the site.

In fact, it makes the whole place sound so incredibly dangerous that we suspect a UFO may have crash-landed nearby, and that extraterrestrials are now being secretly debriefed in the basement.

Contractors KDM Shopfitting Ltd are, of course, simply protecting their backs from frivolous insurance claims. Most locals ignore such alarmism.

However, Tesco’s anondyne hogwash at the same location has gone down a little less well. The ailing supermarket chain’s assurance that ‘We’d love to hear your feedback’ has attracted a small, subversive response from some local hero of the Resistance.

We know it’s childish, but we love it.

Michael Traill Its a shame that an attack against a major successful business is directed at a young lassie doing her job, rather than the leadership of the business.
I use the word attack since you link it to defiance. More lolly some passer by having fun than any form of defiance, attack etc

Susan Spilsbury Really???? Company trying to improving safety onsite and risk injuries to workers and visitors is ridiculous and somebody scrawling on a poster is cool?

Dominic Berry I have always assumed that those catch-all "beware of everything under the sun" notices are more about avoiding legal liability for accidents than about preventing them.

Susan Spilsbury Dominic Berry hard hats and protective footwear are essential.

Dominic Berry I never said they are not.

@theSpurtle Want to tear it down and jump on it. Surprised there no advice on optimal sign reading distance!
