THE GOOD TIMES' TOLL

Enlivened by sunny days and public bank holidays? Moved even a little by royal-wedding joy?

Uplifted by hints of economic upturn and an unaccountable sense of things locally and worldwide slowly, gradually getting less worse?

Thought not. Neither is the street artist who tersely adorned this St Andrew Square lamppost (pictured right).

There is, of course, no long-term cure for Scottish reactions to good times, or even the vaguest imaginations thereof. We don't generally do optimism. Nothing, it seems, will comfort but the certain return of worse weather, weeps and disease, haar in the heart.

There again, in the short term, it's been lovely outside and however wrongheadedly Spurtle is prepared to go out on a limb ... Happy Spring, Broughton!
