HI-TEC AND OLD HOMES – IS YOUR FLAT THERMALLY WELL-BEHAVED?

Broughton flats are providing important energy information for researchers at Edinburgh Napier University’s Scottish Energy Centre, writes Jon Stinson.

The barony's old dwellings are an important part of a larger, collaborative project which includes Historic Scotland and the Edinburgh World Heritage Trust. Traditionally built properties here and across the city and Midlothian are being monitored for gas/electricity consumption and heat demand over 2 years using an innovative, real-time, in-home energy display made by EWGECO (below-right).

The results of the study will contribute towards understanding energy demand and carbon emission rates for pre-1919 dwellings. Quantifying their thermal behaviour and energy profiles will help scientists develop retrofit strategies to enhance energy efficiency in such properties.
