ONE ROTTEN APPLE ...

Submitted by Editor on

Much has been made lately of piffling problems affecting Apple Maps – the computer giant's new cartographic system issued as standard on its latest hand-held devices such as iphones, ipods and ipads.

Irritating nitpickers have noticed occasional lack of detail, distorted satellite images, and wrongly located placenames.

No such fiasco would have befallen Spurtleshire, we hoped, but decided to check.

A cursory glance straightaway revealed two minor flaws in local coverage. First, Bellevue is misspelt 'Bellvue', and second – rather than appearing as a component part – it has been upgraded to appear on equal terms with Broughton, Stockbridge, Bonnington and Leith.

Viewed in greater detail, it became evident Real Foods is situated in the middle of Broughton Street; Pani Solinska (which closed down last year) appears on a traffic island close to the Mansfield Place roundabout; and the London Street Post Office (a fond but distant memory), the London Street Grocery, Mezz and The French Fancies have all relocated to New Broughton.

Meanwhile, a History of Education Centre has opened on the eastbound lane of East London Street, and the Boundary Bar has jumped across Leith Walk to replace Pilrig St Paul's Church. Similarly, The Stag Bar has usurped St Phillip's on Logie Green Road.

Rosebank Cemetery is now listed on Gibson Street, and Warriston Crematorium has gone west to the heart of Warriston Cemetery.

The London Street Sauna is reassuringly rooted to its proper spot, next to Yorg's Framing and Art Gallery which shut in 2010. East Scotland Street Lane ends short, and a new bar – strangely named The Wally Gug – has opened at the south end of Dundas Street.

No doubt these are simple teething troubles, brought about by outdated information carelessly input by non-experts using less than perfect new technology. Train enthusiasts at least will be pleased ...

They can visit two new transport hubs in the capital's East End, both built with very little fanfare, ahead of schedule and on no budget: Edinburgh Rail Station on North Bridge and Central Station on Calton Road.
