PILRIG VIBRATES TO JOYOUS VAISAKHI

Submitted by Editor on

Members of Edinburgh's Sikh community paraded this lunchtime in a colourful (and noisy) celbration of Vaisakhi.

The parade assembled on Mill Lane, then progressed along Bonnington Road, Pilrig Street, Leith Walk, Great Junction Steeet and Cables Wynd before ending up where it had started.

Vaisakhi is also celebrated by Hindus and Buddhists, but for Sikhs it commemorates Guru Gobind Singh's foundation in 1699 of the Panth Khalsa or Order of the Pure Ones.

The parade was preceded by the sound of drums. Then it turned into Pilrig Street in a torrent of gorgeous blues, golds and orange.

Children led the way.

The 'five beloved ones' (Panj Pyare, represented below) were the first to receive the rites of the two-edged sword.

Music was provided by those within Jagdish Singh Bhaker & Sons' beautifully garlanded lorry.

Local politicians brought up the rear. Spurtle spotted Mark Lazarowicz MP and Councillors Hinds and Gardner ...

before toppling backwards into a bush in Pilrig Park. By the time we had retrieved batteries, memory card, spectacles, testicles, wallet and watch, and reassembled them all in the right order, the parade had passed.

Did you take photos of today's parade, or any other colourful aspect of the holiday weekend? We'd love to see them. Contact us by email at spurtle@hotmail.co.uk on Facebook Broughton Spurtle or Twitter @theSpurtle
