What do you make of this?
The Other Place on Broughton Road has announced that ‘The Other Challenge’ is now to be a permanent feature of the establishment.
Anyone who manages to eat their triple chilli cheese burger with a side of chilli cheese fries and onion rings within 20 minutes will have the cost of the meal and any drinks consumed during the process ‘wiped from the bill’.
One’s immediate thought, of course, is that this combination of generous portions and not much time to eat them may mean the main thing being wiped here in future will be warm piles of chilli-cheese-and-onion-scented vomit.
But beyond that unsavoury consideration, is this really what our civilisation has come to?
Whatever happened to the slow-food revolution? What happened to enjoying the flavour and texture of a meal and the conversation which accompanies it. And, at the risk of sounding like a po-faced old Puritan, isn’t this challenge not only stomach-churning but also disrespectful to those people (some of them really not very far from home) who don’t have enough to eat?
