QUICK NEWS ROUND-UP

Submitted by Editor on

Pilrig Street will be closed at the southern end for 7 weeks from 9 January.

Lothian Bus services 11 and N11 will divert between Newhaven Road and Elm Row via Broughton Road and McDonald Road. See map below.

Meanwhile, until September, parking restrictions and lane closures will continue on Leith Walk with closures of, in order and as required, Iona Street, Albert Street, Middlefield, Brunswick Street, Brunswick Road and Shrub Place Lane.

The disruptions are due to upgrading as part of the Leith Project's Phase 4.

Artisan Canonmills Ltd submitted its planning application for the former B&Q site at 13 Warriston Rd shortly before Christmas (Ref. 16/06264/FUL).

The proposal – smaller and better than that mooted at the first public consultation event in August 2016 – is for 184 residential units, achieved by reducing the maximum height of the five blocks by one storey. See our website (11.12.16)

Those wishing to make a comment have until 21 January to do so here. So far, eight members of the public have objected. A CEC determination is expected by 19 April.

In another blow to small, local cafés, Costa Coffee is bound for ground-floor premises in the new development at 39 Haddington Place beside McDonald Road Library.

News broke when the café giant applied for signage permission (Ref. 16/05896/ADV).

Paul Neave Such a shame. Disappointing also to see the Starbucks farther down on Shrub Place consistently busy when there are some fantastic local businesses desperate for custom. Support your local businesses folks!

Scott Richards To me this is another unwelcome arrival in this super area for independents. However, if people will continue to shop in Sainsbury's, Tesco and Starbucks, then the big brands will continue to open.

Roberta Buchan I shop in Sainsbury's because they stock a lot of the items i regularly buy at an affordable price. As a vegetarian and whole food/fresh food enthusiast on a low-ish income i find them my best compromise with my ideal.

David Adam The little independent coffee shops are great but tend to close late afternoon compared to 9pm for the chains.

Samantha Currie Ugh - generic pants!
