THIS SATURDAY – PURPLE WITH PURPOSE

Submitted by Editor on

Stall-holders at St Mary's Market on Broughton Street will show solidarity with one of their own by marking Epilepsy Awareness Day on Saturday.

Rachel Hanretty – Mademoiselle Macaron herself – has epilepsy and faces an operation later this year.

'We're so proud of Rachel’, says Market Operator Vicky MacDonald. ‘She has overcome so many barriers to being a successful entrepreneur and, despite it all, her little business has created a big storm amongst locals and visitors to the market. And she is soon to open her first Parisian cafe in the city centre too so your support will mean a lot to her.

‘We’re a close-knit trading community here, and we asked how we could help’.

The response will be a purple-themed party on 29 March, with £1 from every sale of lavender-flavoured macarons going to Epilepsy Scotland (ES). Larger donations from the public are also welcome!

Some 54,000 people in Scotland live with epilepsy, and although children and older people are most at risk of developing the condition, anyone can develop it at any time. Eight people do so in Scotland each day.

ES works to ensure the needs of people with epilepsy are met. It campaigns for improved healthcare, better information provision and an end to stigma.

The charity – now in its 60th year – is encouraging purple-themed fundraisers across the country on Saturday.
