SOAPBOX 5: MELANIE MAIN (GREEN)

Submitted by Editor on Mon, 08/08/2011 - 15:03

The Scottish Green Party wants to see a living city centre at the heart of Edinburgh – a place where people can grow up, learn, build community and settle into. The City Centre is home to major businesses and the world’s greatest arts festival, but it is so much more than that.

Green Council budget proposals have supported local schools, nurseries and community services, and opposed their closures. If elected we will continue to do so.

Green planning polices promote Living Communities: independent shops, business and voluntary services. Our proposal for an ‘Edinburgh Pound’ favours the hard pressed local traders in Broughton.

Greens campaign for Living, Breathing Spaces of open and green space, such as Barony Community Garden developed by the Edinburgh and Lothians Greenspace Trust, where Green Councillor Steve Burgess sits on the board.

Greens want to see Living Streets: better public transport tackles congestion and air pollution. We want to improve the design or our city centre for pedestrians and cyclists of all ages.

It’s very clear that any party can win this by-election. A Green victory will shake the political status quo, and as the fourth Green Councillor in the City Chambers I could make a great difference. Edinburgh deserves better, Edinburgh deserves a Green sustainable future for the city centre.
