EDINBURGH'S CHRISTMAS CANCELLED

Live events involving mass gatherings at Edinburgh’s Christmas 2020 have been cancelled due to ‘uncertainty’ surrounding the Covid-19 pandemic.

The season will instead be celebrated like Hogmanay online and from home.

The new plan reflects Scottish Government guidance and discussions with NHS Lothian public-health experts. It supersedes proposals for a scaled-down and dispersed arrangement of market stalls, rides, and other attractions.

Council Leader Adam McVey said in a press statement yesterday, ‘As we’ve maintained throughout, our utmost responsibility is to keep our residents safe.

Following the latest restrictions and through the development of plans, it became apparent that activities for Christmas were not going to be possible.’

Underbelly’s Charlie Wood says the party production giants are developing alternative plans for Edinburgh’s Christmas to join Edinburgh’s Hogmanay in a series of ‘digital opportunities for residents and visitors to enjoy from their own homes’.

The decision has seemed inevitable for months.

The response of going online sounds like an April Fool spoof but isn’t. In commercial terms, it represents a major challenge.

More information on the ‘innovative’ revised winter programme will be made available soon.
