WHATEVER IT IS, IT'S ABOUT COFFEE

Submitted by Editor on

This A-board portrait outside Artisan Roast on Broughton Street is, according to a slightly scrambled caption, the result of drinking 10 espressos.

Whether it was the artist or sitter or both who so overconsumed is not clear. Paradoxically, the work is vaguely reminiscent of Salvador Dali's 'Sleep'.

Meanwhile Artisan's website makes interesting reading these days. For example, see Bellevue resident John Thompson's recent blog on a December sourcing trip to Guatemala and Nicaragua. It's fascinating and sobering to consider how Broughton palates are so closely connected to the precarious fortunes of producers far away.

Some of the lots Thompson was securing at the end of last year have since been processed, cured and shipped, and are arriving here from now into June.
