DODGY ELECTION BAR CHARTS 2

Submitted by Editor on

Oh dear. Having pledged we'd take to task all election-connected mangled mathematics that came our way, Spurtle had been hoping we wouldn't have to write anything more on the subject before 8 June.

But no sooner had our first article been published on Monday than a leaflet with yet another dodgy bar chart on it plopped through the letterbox.

An election pledge is an election pledge, so we'll share the offending item with readers here.

ARE YOU SITTING COMFORTABLY?

NOTHING TO WORRY ABOUT IN St ANDREW SQUARE GARDEN

It all began so promisingly.

Uninterrupted grass returfed across St Andrew Square Garden.

The promise of no more intrusive events taking up space here during the Fringe.

And only a few contented tourists sheltering from the rain in Costa Coffee.

And then the sun came out. People began peppering the grass like daisies. It was lovely.

DODGY ELECTION BAR CHARTS

Submitted by Editor on

With yet another election comes the potential for more barcharts to make maths teachers weep.

Throughout this campaign, Spurtle will highlight dodgy barcharts (and perhaps other obviously dubious statistics) from any party or individual standing locally.

The first such example to come to our attention appeared on Conservative candidate Iain McGill's twitter feed on Sunday 7 May.

NOT DARK AND DREARY ENOUGH

Submitted by Editor on

The rather charming quote currently featured on Curiouser and Curiouser’s Broughton Street A-board is taken from Frances Hodgson Burnett’s The Secret Garden (see foot of page).

The original continues, ‘… and things pushing up and working under the earth’, which sounds as though it was written with Leith Street in mind, but wasn't.

Sadly, Burnett’s description is not particularly accurate this spring, where Auld Reekie rain has been in short supply.

You have until 10.00pm tonight to cast your vote in the City of Edinburgh Council election.

You don’t need your poll card to vote, but it will speed things up a bit if you take it along.

If you can’t remember where your polling station is, it is marked on your poll card.

If your dog or toddler has swallowed your poll card, follow this link to outwit them.

SUTTON TRUST SUCCESS FOR DRUMMOND STUDENTS

Katherine Dempsie and Peter Wright, both in S5 at Drummond CHS, have been successful in their application to The Sutton Trust’s prestigious summer US school programme 2017, writes Kirsten Dickson

The Sutton Trust  (ST) aims to tackle inequality and social mobility through education, and Peter and Katherine are the only students from Edinburgh who have made it through the rigorous selection process to the final 150 pupils out of the original 1,000 applicants for this fully funded programme.

MUSIC SCHOOL BACKERS TO SHOW THEIR SUPPORT

Submitted by Editor on

Those wanting a music future for the old Royal High School launched a new initiative this morning in the battle for hearts and minds and ears.

St Mary’s Music School and The Royal High School Preservation Trust say the two ‘national treasures should be together in perfect harmony, and are urging supporters to spread the message by writing to councillors, MSPs and MPs.
