COLLECTING FOR KENYA – DRUMMOND PARTNERS GET BUSY

Submitted by Editor on

This term sees a new group of S4 and S5 students joining the Kenyan Group at Drummond Community High School, writes Partnership Coordinator Annie Scanlon.

They'll be relying on the experience of the S6 students who over the past two years have hosted students from our partner schools – Muthambi Boys and Girls – and visited them in June this summer (see Breaking news, 1.9.12).

This group will be working hard over the year on joint projects in English and Science, and also raising funds for a visit by Kenyan students and teachers in June 2013 before setting out themselves in June 2014.

[img_assist|nid=3400|title=|desc=|link=node|align=right|width=200|height=182]They made a good start last weekend by bag-packing at a local supermarket. They worked really hard and raised enough money for a return airline ticket to Kenya.

However, the first really big fundraising event will be The Media Café on Saturday 10 November, 10am–1pm.

Entry is free, and inside there'll be a sale of donated books, comics, vinyls, CDs, DVDs, videos and computer games. Plus a café, live music and DJ ‘Spicy’.

We hope this will be a fun event for all the family, and we're looking for donations of the above items.

We're very fortunate that our Kenya Partnership is supported by the Army, who give us any spare space in their transport ships to send out much needed educational resources. We are constantly collecting books, stationery and other materials. This year, though, we're targeting science equipment, which is in very short supply in Muthambi.

School laboratories in Kenya are very basic, with few materials and crumbling buildings. The lack of scientific materials means that teachers have to demonstrate rather than allowing students to conduct experiments for themselves.

[img_assist|nid=3412|title=|desc=|link=node|align=right|width=200|height=150]If you have contacts with laboratories or scientific suppliers we'd be grateful for any contacts or donations. The shipments usually go out to Kenya in March/April each year (see Breaking news, 28.3.11).

To donate any of the items mentioned above, or to help us out in some other way, please contact admin@drummond.edin.sch.uk or Tel: 0131 556 2651.
