DRUMMOND MATHEMATICIANS TOP AGAIN

Submitted by koru on

Drummond students have achieved a second consecutive victory in the Enterprising Maths in the Lothians competition.

Benjamin Sterratt (S4, pictured left) Daniel Farrow (S3), Mhairi Dickie (S4) and Sara Leszczynska (S3, pictured right) tackled a variety of mathematical puzzles and problems to beat off competition from 26 teams from across Edinburgh, East Lothian and Midlothian.

The puzzles ranged from creating a poster, to a whole-team competition, a speed competition, a relay competition, individual mental calculation rounds and an aeroplane-building task.

According to Maths teacher Michael Steel, 'The team were magnificent throughout, performing superbly in every round, hugely impressing the teaching staff, the actuarial staff (who were sponsoring and supporting the event), and Advanced Higher Maths pupils helping out on the day'.

The team have now qualified, again, for the national finals due to take place in Glasgow in November. In the last national finals they came ninth out of 58 in Scotland.
