In the run-up to Halloween, we have been presenting some more or less unsettling images of life in Edinburgh.
Today we conclude with an unpleasant episode on Chambers Street.
Spurtle contributor A. McIntosh dimly perceived this revenant during a return visit to the National Museum of Scotland on 15 October 2025.
The 6th-century cowl appeared to have been invested by an old man whose troubled expression and voiceless imprecations suggested a mixture of confusion and irritability.
Such ancient survivals are very rare. This example’s preservation in a peat bog may also, perhaps, in a way as yet unexplained by science, have made possible the ghostly persistence of its former owner.
