LOCALS RETAIN WORLD TEAM TITLE

VICTORY WITH A HOP, SKIP AND A THUMP

Players from Drummond Tennis Club have once again beaten all comers to retain their title as team champions in the World Stone Skimming Championships, writes Marcus Mackenzie.

The annual event is held near Oban on Easdale Island, the smallest permanently inhabited island of the Inner Hebrides. It was once the centre of a thriving Scottish slate mining industry, but now one of the disused quarries forms the arena for the World Stone Skimming Championships.

Competition was fierce this September, with the men's singles title going to the Japanese national champion.

But the Drummond Wanderers aimed for consistency over individual glory, and made this their third team title in the last four years.

Special mention goes to the newest member of the team Bruce McKerracher, who has newly moved into the hallowed catchment of Spurtleshire. He made it to the final with a throw hitting the fabled 'back wall'.

Keeping Drummond on the world map!
