DRUMMOND SEEKS COMMUNITY INVOLVEMENT IN FUNDRAISER

Staff and students at Drummond Community High School – and members of the community – are gearing up for a sponsored walk/run during the morning of Friday 1 April.

The venue will be Holyrood Park and organisers are looking for local people, businesses, classes and groups to take part.

Funds raised will go towards the £15,000 needed to bring pupils from Drummond's partner schools in Muthambi, Kenya over to Edinburgh this summer.

DRUMMOND STAFF AND STUDENTS HEAD FOR KENYA

At 4am tomorrow morning, 8 S6 students and 3 members of staff from Drummond Community High School will be on their way to Kenya.

Since February 2008 (Issue 155) Spurtle has been covering Drummond's partnership with the Muthambi Boys and Girls High Schools at the foot of Mount Kenya. Now they've raised enough money to open this latest chapter, had the jabs, worked out what they want to achieve and are ready to go.

NEW HEAD PRAISES DRUMMOND COMMUNITY HIGH SCHOOL

Drummond Community High School's 'new' Head Teacher Norma Prentice outlined a year of challenges and successes at Tuesday's Celebration of Achievement and Prize Giving Ceremony.

A firm believer in the effectiveness of partnership-working between home and school, she thanked staff, students, parents, carers and friends in the community, and spoke of her excitement at joining a school which is already doing well but where the best is yet to come.

'Often, we feel: Why bother? Why go through all this study? Who cares?

Drummond showcases new approaches to literacy

Drummond Community High School recently held their first Literacy Across Learning evening for parents, writes English teacher Jo Moore. Imaginatively titled 'I’m A Parent, Help Me Out Here!', the main purpose of the event was to help parents understand and engage with the role literacy will play under the new Curriculum for Excellence. However, it also gave staff a perfect opportunity to showcase some of the excellent work students have been producing this session.

Remembering the Holocaust

Each year at Drummond CHS we remember the millions who died in the Holocaust and in other genocide attacks since World War II, writes Annie Scanlon the school Librarian.

This year  Shirley-Anne Somerville, MSP talked to the students at the start of a whole school memorial assembly. There followed by a very moving drama performed by students and staff about the build-up to the Holocaust.
