HUB LAUNCHED TO HELP BUSINESSES

A new, free service for businesses and individuals was launched on 14 April.

An initiative by Business Gateway and Edinburgh City Libraries, the Leith Business Hub – based in McDonald Road Library – offers comprehensive business advice and training outwith normal trading hours.

Workshops on electronic business, salesmanship, marketing and cost-cutting will be offered, as well as one-to-one meetings with experienced experts. To book an individual advice session, Tel. 0131 247 2820.

NEW CANDIDATE STANDS FOR EDINBURGH NORTH AND LEITH

A seventh candidate is now standing for the Edinburgh North and Leith constituency in the 6 May General Election.

Local man John Hein will represent the Liberal Party.

He has been issued with an invitation to participate at the Spurtle Hustings on 21 April alongside candidates from the Conservative, Green, Labour, Liberal-Democrat, Scottish Nationalist, and Trade Unionist and Socialist Coalition Parties.

TOO COLD FOR COMFORT

'Some Like It Too Hot' is a new exhibition at Out of the Blue showing Leith as you've never seen it before.

A mixture of interviews, portraiture and strangely beautiful thermal images chart 10 households' struggle to retain heat.

Energy advice will be offered, as will a chance to use the thermal camera.

The exhibition is free and runs from 10am–5pm, 12–24 April at the Old Drill Hall, 36 Dalmeny Street.

AXOLOTL – SPRING EXHIBITION

Roland Corbin's 'Lost in Reverie' (below) is one of several extraordinary images featured in Axolotl's new Spring Exhibition.

The Dundas Street gallery will concentrate this month on Michael Wildman's photographic variations on Rodin's 'Crouching Woman', Steven Hendry's trademark nude tableaux, Sarah Wilson's found objects, Philomena Pretsell's urban ceramics, and Jill Farquhar's faux-naïve female portraits.

GREAT CHANCE FOR BUDDING AUTHORS

The Scottish Book Trust has launched awards for 3 teenaged writers aged 14-17.

Participants will be mentored over 7 months by Cathy Forde, author of Sugarcoated, SKAARS and Firestarter. She'll help them to hone their creative writing skills.

They'll also get to meet other writers and agents, visit Scholastic (the London publisher of the Horrible Histories and Philip Pulman's His Dark Materials), and attend the Edinburgh International Book Festival.

INTO THE CIRCUS AT OUT OF THE BLUE

A free circus day day for children will run at Out of the Blue from 11am to 4.30pm on Saturday 10 April.

The event – to include trapeze lessons, face painting and a short show by Strangebird Zirkus – is to raise money for Edinburgh-based charity Edinburgh Direct Aid (EDA).

EDA personally delivers aid to those in dire need of it, such as Kenyan AIDS orphans, special-needs kids in Bosnia, and homeless people in Gaza.

FUSION HOUSE PLAN GETS CLEAR GO-AHEAD

The City of Edinburgh Planning Committee has granted permission to turn the modern office block at 73 Logie Green Road into a residential care home (Ref. 10/00228/FUL).

The scheme, reported in 'Breaking news' last month (1.3.10), accords with the City's Development Plan and non-statutory guidelines. Officials considered that installation of additional windows would improve the building's appearance.

ROCK TALENTS BOOKED

Local rock bands Ascendant (pictured), Sneaky Monkey, and Sugar Rush will star in a concert hosted by Drummond CHS on 22 April. ESRE (Edinburgh Schools Rock Ensemble) will guest.

Event Manager Victoria Marshall says: ‘This is an event not to be missed. We need the support of the whole community to buy tickets and get involved.’

The concert is part of Drummond’s Wider Achievement Opportunity Programme, and gives musicians and their vital technical, marketing and sales supporters a chance to experience what making it in a musical career is really like.
