ALBANY AND NORTHUMBERLAND STREET TRAFFIC – NEW COUNCIL FIGURES

Submitted by Editor on

Chris Highcock – part of the Council's Tram Communications Team – has distributed updated data concerning traffic volume and speed on Albany Street.

We reproduce these files unedited below.

Analysing data gathered by radar detector since 24 July, he concludes that:

  • Traffic peaked around mid to late August and has now returned to July levels.
  • Average traffic speeds continue at just over 20mph.
  • Average speed for the week up to 27 September–2 October was lower than average.

These figures are unlikely to convince vocal residents who feel strongly that Council figures significantly under-represent average speeds and do not address the number of HGVs using the York Place diversion route (see Breaking news, 1.10.12).

This morning, Mr Highcock released additional data for the section of Northumberland Street east of Dundas St (data for the section west of Dundas Street will arrive soon). These show average speeds hovering just above 20mph, and traffic volumes peaking at around 225 vehicles per hour during the evening rush-hour. The Council's graph is also reproduced, unchanged below.

Whilst Council officers continue to monitor the route, members of the public are invited to report specific concerns to either trams@edinburgh.gov.uk or Tel. 0800 328 3934.
